Plot summary
Snowfield, Colorado, is a small ski resort village in the Rocky Mountains, and Dr. Jennifer Pailey works there. She brings her sister Lisa for a visit, and the two find nobody about and some corpses, among them the baker and his wife, whose heads lie severed in an oven. The sheriff, Bryce Hammond, a former FBI agent, is looking into the killings, and he and deputies Stu Wargle and Steve Shanning come upon the sisters. At a hotel the group finds a victim's writing on a mirror, the name Timothy Flyte. Shanning goes outside to check a sound and does not come back; the others find only his gun, his hat and his shoes.

- In 2017 Rose McGowan claimed Miramax boss Harvey Weinstein sexually assaulted her at the Sundance Film Festival in January 1997, and that during a Phantoms photoshoot she told Ben Affleck, who allegedly replied he had already told Weinstein to stop.
- Ben Affleck had cosmetic work done on his teeth for Armageddon, shot in late 1997, so in the Phantoms reshoots his teeth appear noticeably whiter than in scenes that were shot earlier.
- Producer Joel Soisson spent ten years pursuing the rights to Dean Koontz's novel after reading it and was key to getting Phantoms set up at Miramax, after producer Steven Lane had bought the rights first.
