Plot summary
Robinson Crusoe has lived alone on an island for years when a canoe brings Friday and four companions. Crusoe kills the other four and takes Friday back to his camp as a prisoner. Friday learns English quickly, and Crusoe sets about teaching him Western notions of property, sport, punishment and the fear of God. Friday meets the lessons with bewilderment and amusement, mocking ideas that strike him as senseless and destructive, and he rebels, refusing to be a slave. Crusoe, unable to bear solitude, concedes that Friday is a human being, though not an equal, and pays him a gold coin a day for his labor, though money has no use on the island.

Man Friday was recut without the involvement of director Jack Gold, and the new version added a more optimistic ending by removing the scene in which Crusoe commits suicide.- Man Friday was meant to be filmed in Hawaii, but the production wound up shooting in Mexico at Puerto Vallarta because it was cheaper there.
