Plot summary
Remy is a rat with an extraordinary sense of taste and smell who wants to cook rather than scavenge, while his colony, led by his father, Django, and including his brother Émile, keeps to an attic outside Paris and stays wary of humans. Separated from the others during a hasty evacuation, Remy finds his way to Paris and to Gusteau's restaurant, now run by Skinner and holding three stars. There he crosses paths with Alfredo Linguini, a clumsy new garbage boy who ruins a pot of soup. Remy fixes it, the soup is served by accident and becomes a hit, and the restaurant's only woman chef, Colette Tatou, argues that Linguini should stay. Skinner orders Linguini to take the rat outside, and Linguini instead persuades Remy to help him cook.

- To get rat movement right, animators consulted rat expert Debbie Ducommun and kept live pet rats in a hallway at the studio for over a year, studying how their fur, noses, ears, paws and tails moved as they ran.
- It turns up in Everything Everywhere All at Once, where lead actress Michelle Yeoh's character uses the Pixar film to explain the multiverse but misremembers it as being about a raccoon, titled Raccacoonie.
- A planned tie-in wine for Costco stores was scrapped after a wine industry group objected to putting cartoon characters on alcohol labels over concerns it could appeal to underage drinkers.
- Jan Pinkava devised the concept, characters and core story in 2000 but was never formally named director, and left Pixar in 2005 once management, lacking confidence in the story, turned to Brad Bird.
- The film's signature dish was real: producer Brad Lewis interned at Thomas Keller's restaurant The French Laundry, where Keller developed the confit byaldi that the movie uses.
