Biography

Arthur Lowe was an English actor who spent 37 years in theater, film and television. Born in Hayfield, Derbyshire, he started as a professional actor in 1945 after serving in the Second World War, and first drew national attention as Leonard Swindley in Coronation Street from 1960 to 1965. His best remembered role was Captain Mainwaring in the sitcom Dad's Army, which he played from 1968 to 1977, and he also appeared in its 1971 film version. On screen he worked with director Lindsay Anderson on if.... (1968) and O Lucky Man! (1973), winning a BAFTA in the supporting actor category for the latter. Other films included The Bed Sitting Room (1969), The Ruling Class (1972) and Theatre of Blood (1973). He was nominated for seven BAFTAs and remained busy professionally until his death in 1982.
