Hugh Griffith

Biography

Hugh Griffith was a Welsh actor whose career across theater, film and television lasted more than forty years. He was born in Marian-glas, Anglesey, Wales, and after failing a university English exam he became a bank clerk in London. He earned a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, but his plans were interrupted by six years of army service with the Royal Welch Fusiliers, and he resumed acting in 1946 with the Royal Shakespeare Company. On stage he was known for playing Falstaff, Lear and Prospero and was nominated for a Tony Award for Look Homeward, Angel. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Ben-Hur (1959) and was nominated for Tom Jones (1963), and also received three Golden Globe nominations for Tom Jones, Oliver! (1968) and The Fixer (1968). His television work included Quatermass II (1955), The Citadel (1960) and Clochemerle (1972). He died in 1980.

Before acting, Griffith worked as a bank clerk and moved to London to be nearer acting work, after failing the English exam needed for university.
