Plot summary
Nicole Bonnet lives with her father Charles, a Paris art collector who forges and sells the work of famous painters, and she fears he will be caught. One night she finds a burglar in the mansion, Simon Dermott, holding a forged Van Gogh. She fires an antique gun and grazes his arm, then drives him back to his hotel instead of calling the police. Charles lends the Kléber-Lafayette Museum a Cellini Venus carved by his own father, and the insurance policy he signs calls for a forensic examination. Taking the statuette back would look suspicious, so Nicole turns to Simon for help. Davis Leland, an American collector who covets the Venus, proposes marriage to her.
