Plot summary
Thomas Kinkade studies fine arts at Berkeley and rides home to Placerville, California, for the Christmas break with his brother Pat. Their mother, Maryanne, needs more than $3000 by New Year's Day to keep the family cottage, and she refuses to burden her sons with her troubles. Tom and Pat look for Christmas-break work anyway. Tom lines up a $500 job finishing a mural of Placerville for the tree-lighting ceremony, where Ernie plans to boost tourism by declaring the town the Christmas Tree Capital of America. Tom considers the mural beneath him until his mentor, the ailing painter Glen Wesman, who can no longer paint the way he used to, urges him to take even this work seriously. Tom also calls Glen's art dealer, Sidney, to ask whether he might sell paintings of his own.
