Plot summary
Rudolf von Tannen, a millionaire with no interest in anyone except his dalmatians, throws a dinner party for his relatives. The dogs are fed caviar and the guests receive bones. After the party Rudolf has a heart attack and falls into a coma, and his family gathers to quarrel over the inheritance. Meleagre, his eccentric nephew, overhears them and slips away. Five years later Rudolf is still unconscious. Meleagre lives in the sewers with Dima, a petty thief who steals at carnivals and traveling circuses to keep them both fed, dodging a bartender he owes money to and a woman named Ambrosia whose love he trades for cash. Both men wait for the fortune they believe is coming.
