John Standing
Biography
John Standing is an English actor whose career began on the stage and later expanded into film and television. Born in London, he started out in a 1955 Peter Brook production of Titus Andronicus and went on to leading roles in plays including The Importance of Being Earnest and Private Lives. Close of Play at the National Theatre brought him an Olivier nomination in 1979. His screen debut came with The Wild and the Willing (1962), followed by King Rat (1965), Walk Don't Run (1966), The Psychopath (1966), The Eagle Has Landed (1976), The Elephant Man (1980), Mrs Dalloway (1997) and A Good Woman (2004). On television he played Sidney Godolphin in The First Churchills, appeared in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, the sitcom The Other 'Arf and the American series Lime Street, and was cast as Jon Arryn in Game of Thrones.
