Plot summary
At Brookfield School, just outside London, Arthur Chipping has taught Latin and Greek for years by 1924, and the boys call him Ditchy. At the Savoy Hotel, on the night before his summer holiday, he meets Katherine Bridges, a music hall performer tired of her career, her social circle and her romances. She takes a Mediterranean cruise, runs into Chipping again at Paestum, and the two spend a day there. Back in Britain she arranges an evening at the theatre, and they fall in love. When Chipping returns to Brookfield for the autumn term, his wife is with him. The staff are shocked, the pupils are charmed by her, and her husband grows gentler with his classes.

- Gower Champion fired Lee Remick from the film and replaced her with Petula Clark after seeing raw footage of Clark in Finian's Rainbow; Remick sued MGM for damages.
- Richard Burton balked at playing opposite a "pop singer," so he was replaced in Goodbye, Mr. Chips by Peter O'Toole.
- In 1964 trade advertisements announced that Julie Andrews, fresh from Mary Poppins, was to star opposite Rex Harrison in a Mr. Chips musical directed by Vincente Minnelli, but the project came to nothing.
- Goodbye, Mr. Chips was the first film directed by choreographer Herbert Ross, who took over after Gower Champion left the project.
