Plot summary
In nineteenth century Germany, Clara Stahlbaum celebrates Christmas Eve with her brother Fritz, her older sister Louise and their parents. Louise already has a boyfriend, Erik, and Clara wonders about growing up. The eccentric toymaker Drosselmeier, a family friend, arrives with an automated toy castle and a nutcracker for Clara, but Fritz damages it while cracking nuts. To cheer her, Drosselmeier tells how a king and queen's vain daughter, Princess Perlipat, was made ugly by the Mouse Queen, and how he and his nephew Hans captured the castle mice. Hans cracked the hard nut that cured the princess, and the Mouse Queen turned him into a nutcracker. Drosselmeier says the spell breaks only if the nutcracker slays the Mouse King.

- Warner Bros. came to partner with Lacewood Productions because its own Rover Dangerfield, originally intended to be R-rated in the vein of Ralph Bakshi's films, was reworked into a family-friendly film, delaying production while large portions had to be redone.
- Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times panned the characterisation of the Nutcracker as a “monster”, writing that a person who kills someone else simply for his own convenience is known as a psychopath, and asking why so many children's stories make the heroes, not the villains, psychopaths.
- The Nutcracker Prince opened on 906 screens across the United States on November 21, 1990 and earned a disappointing $1.7 million, because Warner Bros. Pictures, which owned the American distribution rights, gave it very little promotion.
