Simon Ward
Biography
Simon Ward was a British stage and film actor who studied drama at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, starting in 1961, and began his professional stage career with Northampton Repertory in 1963. After playing Dennis in Joe Orton's Loot in 1966 he moved into film and television, and the title role in Young Winston (1972) brought him national prominence. He spent the rest of the 1970s in high-profile pictures, among them The Three Musketeers (1973), Hitler: The Last Ten Days (1973), The Four Musketeers (1974) and Zulu Dawn (1979), and later appeared as Zor-El in Supergirl (1984) and in Wuthering Heights (1992). On stage he starred in Ross, a West End revival of Terence Rattigan's play, in 1986, and on television he was Sir Monty Everard in Judge John Deed from 2001 to 2007 and Bishop Stephen Gardiner in The Tudors. He died in 2012.

Early training
Ward was one of the founding members of the drama group at Alleyn's School that became the National Youth Theatre, joining at 14 and staying eight years.
Big break
Ward got his big break in theater in 1966, playing Dennis in Joe Orton's Loot. That part brought him several small roles in film and television.
First role
Ward likely made his film debut in Lindsay Anderson's If.... (1968), playing one of the sociopathic students without receiving credit.
Big break
In 1971, Ward was chosen for the title role in Young Winston. At the time he worked mainly in the theater, and this part made him well known across the country.
A role that slipped away
Ward stepped in for Stephen Fry in the play Cell Mates in 1995, taking on the part at very short notice after Fry left the production near the start of its run.
Beyond film
Ward took the title role in Ross in 1986. That West End production was the play's first revival there since Terence Rattigan's original run in 1960.
