Plot summary
Money is short in the Carraclough household. Sam, a miner with no work, cannot put enough food on the table, so he sells the dog, Lassie, to the Duke of Rudling. The Duke's granddaughter, Cilla, meets the Collie and takes a liking to her. Joe, Sam's son, is upset at losing her. The Duke's servant, Hynes, frightens Lassie, and she slips away again and again, turning up at the Carracloughs' home, where the family has to take her back; Hynes blames Joe for those departures. When the Duke goes to the Scottish Highlands for Christmas, Lassie goes with him, and from there her long journey home to Yorkshire starts.
