Marne Maitland

Biography

Marne Maitland was an Anglo-Indian actor, born in Calcutta, who worked mainly in Britain in character roles and later in Italy. He acted with repertory companies, served in the Royal Artillery during the Second World War, and afterward joined the Old Vic Company. His first film was Cairo Road (1950). His dark features and short build led to typecasting as Middle Eastern and Far Eastern villains, especially for Hammer, in films such as The Camp on Blood Island (1958), The Terror of the Tongs (1961) and The Reptile (1966). He also appeared in Bhowani Junction (1956), I'm All Right Jack (1959), Lord Jim (1965) and Man of La Mancha (1972), and played the gunsmith Lazar in The Man with the Golden Gun (1974). He moved to Rome in the early 1970s, appearing in Federico Fellini's Roma (1972) and The Belly of an Architect (1987), and he also worked as an English-language dubber and took many television parts.
