Nigel Stock
Biography
Nigel Stock was a British actor who specialized in character parts across film and television, and he became familiar for playing dependable English soldiers and officials in war and historical dramas. Born in Malta, he was raised in India and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His stage work began in 1931 and later took him to the Old Vic and Broadway, while his earliest screen credit came with Lancashire Luck in 1937. After serving in the Second World War, he returned to acting and appeared in Brighton Rock (1948), Victim (1961), The Great Escape (1963), The Lion in Winter (1968) and The Lost Continent (1968). From 1964 to 1968 he portrayed Dr. Watson in the BBC's Sherlock Holmes adaptations, which made him a household name in the UK, and he later played the title part in Owen, M.D. and Samson in Van der Valk. He appeared in Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) as the detective's mentor.
