Plot summary
Andy Davis is 17 and about to leave for college, and he plans to bring Woody along. Buzz Lightyear, Jessie and the rest of the toys are packed into a bag for the attic, but Andy's mother takes that bag out to the curb thinking it is garbage. The toys free themselves, decide that Andy meant to discard them, and climb into a donation box beside Barbie that is headed for Sunnyside Daycare. Woody follows and cannot persuade them of what really happened. At Sunnyside, Lotso, Big Baby and Ken greet the newcomers and show them the play area, and Barbie falls for Ken. Every toy decides to remain except Woody, who sets out for home. A girl named Bonnie finds him and brings him to her house.

- Disney's abandoned first attempt at Toy Story 3, developed at Circle Seven Animation, was a whodunit in which Andy's toys, staying at his grandmother's house, tried to figure out who was stealing toys one by one; Disney liked the script enough to consider it for a possible fourth film.
- A later scrapped Circle Seven script had Andy's toys shipping a malfunctioning Buzz Lightyear back to his Taiwan factory for repair, only to discover online that the company had issued a massive recall of Buzz toys worldwide.
- When Pixar took over the project from the shuttered Circle Seven Animation, its own directors retreated to the cabin where Toy Story was first pitched, dropped their initial idea as not good enough, and only found a workable new story after rewatching the first two films.
- When Pixar revisited its original Toy Story computer files, error messages blocked them from editing the old 3D models, forcing the studio to rebuild the characters from scratch for the sequel.
- Pixar spent more than a year and a half on research and development just to build the simulation systems needed for the film's chaotic junkyard sequence.
- Instead of sending Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and John Ratzenberger scripts to consider, Pixar screened them a full story reel with pre-recorded voices, sound effects and music, and all three actors signed on right after the screening.
- Tom Hanks was paid $15 million to voice Woody in Toy Story 3, the highest salary ever paid to a voice actor.
- To design the film's climactic incinerator sequence, Pixar artists toured a real Northern California landfill and incinerator, including the Altamont dump, and even though similar research had gone into WALL-E, this time the location had to feel like it was actually trying to kill the characters.
