Plot summary
Doug Kinney's construction work in Los Angeles takes him away from his wife Laura and their children. While he is on a job at a scientific facility, he meets Dr. Leeds, a scientist who has found a way to clone a human being. Dr. Leeds makes a copy of Doug, and the copy goes to work in his place, leaving Doug free for his family. The copy calls himself Lance, shares Doug's memories and knowledge, and exaggerates Doug's masculine side. Doug keeps the arrangement secret.

- Harold Ramis tried to convince Tom Hanks to star in Multiplicity, a script by the husband and wife writing team Chris Miller and Mary Hale, based on a short story by Miller published in National Lampoon.
- The poor opening weekend was blamed on the Olympic Games, but John Krier, head of Exhibitor Relations, disagreed and said competition from other films was the cause, since total grosses matched the previous year; Multiplicity was chasing the same audience as Eddie Murphy's The Nutty Professor.
