Plot summary
Don Pedro of Aragon has just crushed a rebellion led by his half-brother Don John and comes to Messina to stay with his friend Leonato. His nobleman Benedick renews an old war of words with Beatrice, Leonato's niece; each claims to scorn love and the other. Claudio, a young count in Don Pedro's company, has loved Leonato's daughter Hero since before the fighting and finds her unchanged. Don Pedro offers to plead for him at a masked celebration, an arrangement Don John tries to break. Don Pedro, Leonato and Claudio then let Benedick overhear a false account of Beatrice's love for him, and Hero, Ursula and Margaret work the same trick on Beatrice.

- Kenneth Branagh shot the film at the Villa Vignamaggio, believed to be where Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa, and Branagh lodged in the same room where Lisa del Giocondo, the portrait's subject, is said to have stayed.
- Walt Disney Pictures and Paramount Pictures both turned the film down before the Samuel Goldwyn Company financed and distributed it, as part of a two-picture deal that also covered Branagh's Peter's Friends.
