Plot summary
Tobey Marshall works out of the garage his father left him in Mount Kisco, New York, building and tuning cars with a crew of friends. The bank payments are behind, so the group races after dark for cash. Dino Brewster, once a local rival and now a professional driver with a dealership, arrives with a rare Ford Shelby Mustang that needs finishing, and offers the crew a quarter of the proceeds from its sale. Tobey takes the job despite his friends' misgivings. At the New York auction, broker Julia Maddon says her client will buy the car if it can be proven to exceed 230 mph, a claim Dino refuses to let Tobey test.

- Taylor Kitsch was offered the lead of Tobey Marshall in July 2012 before it went to Aaron Paul that October. Paul had actually auditioned for the villain Dino Brewster, but director Scott Waugh and DreamWorks head Steven Spielberg decided to make him the hero instead.
- The chases were shot with practical effects rather than computer imagery, so the cast had to take intensive driving lessons. Every exotic car on screen except the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Roadster was a kit car replica.
