Plot summary
Detectives Christopher Danson and P. K. Highsmith are the ones the precinct brags about, even though catching small-time criminals costs the city plenty in wrecked property. Terry Hoitz, whose reputation rests on having shot Derek Jeter during the World Series, is partnered with Allen Gamble, a forensic accountant. When Danson and Highsmith plunge from a building while pursuing jewel thieves, detectives across the precinct angle for their places. Allen wants only to look into a scaffolding permit violation by Sir David Ershon, a British billionaire, and Terry goes along to make the arrest. Mercenaries led by Roger Wesley meet them there, and Ershon is seized.
