Plot summary
Jack Butler is an automotive engineer in a Detroit suburb, where he and Caroline are raising Alex, Kenny and Megan. When the early-1980s recession costs Jack, Larry and Stan their jobs at Ford, Caroline draws on her college education and her old advertising experience to return to work. Jack stays home with the children and the house, a juggling act he has never handled before. His confusion over daily errands draws the notice and company of neighborhood housewives, among them Joan, Caroline's friend, whose manner toward him is flirtatious. Caroline's new employer, Ron Richardson, pursues her even as she tries to hold her place at the agency.

- Universal executives fired writer John Hughes from his own script simply because he insisted on working out of Chicago instead of Los Angeles, replacing him with a group of TV writers to rewrite it.
