Plot summary
Kate Frazier leaves an abusive policeman husband and moves to Chicago, taking an office job and keeping mostly to herself, embarrassed by the black eye from his last attack. From a roof across from her office, hit man Frank Logan watches her through his rifle scope, then steps out onto the ledge. Her cry from the sidewalk startles him backward onto the roof. Later that night she meets him at her apartment building, where he helps her carry a Christmas tree upstairs; he returns, collapses with pneumonia, and she gets him to a hospital. Their friendship grows, and a detective, Dave Murcheson, who is working a murder case, takes an interest in her.
