Plot summary
Drake Goodman and Patty Palmer buy a 19th-century Victorian house in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco, renting the first-floor apartments to cover the costs. The Watanabes take one; Carter Hayes arrives to view the other, driving an expensive Porsche and carrying cash, and refuses a credit check. He offers six months' rent by wire transfer in exchange for references, and Drake waives the check. Hayes moves in unannounced and shuts himself inside. The promised transfer never arrives, and hammering and drilling sound at all hours. When Drake cuts the apartment's electricity and heat, Hayes calls the police, who side with him. The couple engages an attorney, Stephanie MacDonald.

- Daniel Pyne later reflected that he had "written almost a thriller", and that when Morgan Creek bought it "they decided they wanted it to be a thriller, through and through. So the ending became much more straightforward."
