Plot summary
In 2028, OmniCorp has supplied robotic peacekeeping drones to the military overseas for years, but American law enforcement is not allowed to use them: the Dreyfus Act bans militarized drones at home, and most Americans oppose military systems in their communities. Chief executive Raymond Sellars wants that market anyway and asks roboticist Dr. Dennett Norton about the viability of building cyborgs. Norton tells him the process would be deeply traumatic and that the right candidate is essential. Detroit police detective Alex Murphy, who works to hold back crime and corruption in the city, is critically injured by a car bomb, and Norton persuades Murphy's wife, Clara, to approve the procedure.

- During the shoot, Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles said José Padilha called him to admit he was having "the worst experience of his life", with nine of every ten of his ideas cut, and quoted Padilha: "It's hell here... I have never suffered so much and I don't want to do it again."
- Hugh Laurie was set to play OmniCorp CEO Raymond Sellars in June 2012 but declined, and Clive Owen was in the running to replace him until Michael Keaton was cast in August 2012.
- MGM wanted a 3D RoboCop after the success of Avatar, and the studio's ownerless finances plus creative disagreements with Darren Aronofsky kept the remake on hold; Brazilian director José Padilha replaced Aronofsky in 2011.
- Edward Norton, Sean Penn, Gael García Bernal and Rebecca Hall were initially considered for the roles of Dr. Dennett Norton, Novak, Jack Lewis and Clara Murphy; those parts went to Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael K. Williams and Abbie Cornish.
- Michael Fassbender, Matthias Schoenaerts and Russell Crowe were considered to play Alex Murphy before Joel Kinnaman was confirmed as the lead in March 2012.
- Composer Pedro Bromfman built RoboCop's cyborg sound by mixing synthesizers with an 80-piece orchestra, altering them digitally and adding cuíca, berimbau, waterphone, electric drill and hang, plus a nod to Basil Poledouris's 1987 theme.
