Plot summary
Chuck Lumley works at a New York City morgue, a job he took after leaving a career as a stockbroker. When the day post goes to his boss's nephew, Leonard, Chuck is moved to the night shift. His new co-worker, Bill Blazejowski, calls himself Billy Blaze and talks constantly about schemes to get rich. Chuck's neighbor, Belinda Keaton, is a good-natured prostitute whose pimp has been killed, leaving her and her friends without protection from their clients. Billy proposes that he and Chuck act as love brokers for Belinda and the others, working out of the morgue at night.

- The closing theme song, "That's What Friends Are For", was written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager and performed by Rod Stewart; it gained popularity a few years later when covered by Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder.
- The film has brief scenes with a young Kevin Costner as "frat boy #1", Shannen Doherty as a Bluebird scout, Vincent Schiavelli as a man who delivers a sandwich and Charles Fleischer as one of the jail prisoners.
- Night Shift gave Michael Keaton his first starring role, in a cast headed by Henry Winkler and also featuring Shelley Long.
