Mitch Rapp and Katrina Harper are on vacation in Ibiza, and moments after she accepts his proposal of marriage a jihadist cell comes ashore and attacks the civilians with rifles. Rapp is wounded and Katrina is killed. Eighteen months later he trains in martial arts and marksmanship while cultivating the terrorist behind her death on an internet message board, until an invitation to meet in Libya arrives. U.S. Special Forces raid the meeting and Rapp is taken into CIA custody and debriefed for thirty days. CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy then offers him a place in a black operations unit called Orion, run by Stan Hurley, a former Navy SEAL and Cold War veteran who trains the recruits.
