Plot summary
Artie Lewis is a New York City police detective, and Stevie Diroma has been his partner for eight years. Stevie is a widower raising three young daughters, Marian, Barbara and Carol. After Stevie dies while on duty, his will leaves Artie as the girls' legal guardian, and Artie and his wife Rita take them in. Rita and Artie have no children of their own and hope to adopt the girls, but Child Welfare Services objects that the family's apartment is too small for three children; Barbara also has diabetes and needs daily insulin shots. To satisfy the agency, Artie believes he must buy a house, and the one he has picked carries a $25,000 down payment he cannot cover. Artie has investigated Beniamino Rios, a drug kingpin.
