Plot summary
Julia Mann and Kevin Vallick are speechwriters on opposite sides of a New Mexico Senate race: she writes for the Democrat, Lloyd Wannamaker, and he for the Republican, Ray Garvin. They meet in the hotel gift shop in Las Cruces where both are staying, quarrel over the last box of sleep medicine, and find that they share insomnia and a trade. A romance begins before either admits what they do for a living. Annette, Kevin's ex-wife, hired him for Garvin's campaign. Julia's estranged fiancé, the war correspondent Robert "Baghdad Bob" Freed, wants her back; she had ended their engagement, believing he wanted a cheering section rather than a wife.

- The film was widely seen as imitating the real-life romance of rival political consultants James Carville, an advisor to Bill Clinton's first presidential campaign, and Mary Matalin, a speechwriter for President George H. W. Bush. Michael Keaton said the script predated their meeting, though he watched The War Room, a documentary about Carville's work, to prepare.
- In several Latin American countries the film was released under the title No Se TĂș, borrowing the name of Mexican singer Luis Miguel's 1992 hit song, which was included on the soundtrack.
