Plot summary
Detective Amanda Beck finds the body of a boy whose head is wrapped in a shirt. Another boy, Neil Spencer, is missing. The staging resembles the crimes of Frank Carter, the Whisper Man, who killed boys in the 1990s until Detective Peter Willis caught him. Amanda asks the retired Peter for advice, but he will not meet Frank, who speaks only with him. Tom Kennedy, a novelist whose wife has died, settles in Garretton, the town she came from, with his son Jake, who has made no friends since his mother died and speaks of an imaginary friend, a girl in a blue sweater. One night Tom finds Jake at the front door, reciting the rhyme of the Whisper Man, while a hand pushes through the letter box. Jake disappears, and Tom asks his estranged father to help.
