Plot summary
Herbie is a Volkswagen Beetle that thinks for itself, and after a run of losses he is towed to a junkyard. Maggie Peyton, the youngest of the Peyton racing family, goes there with her father, Ray Peyton Sr., who lets her choose a car as a present for her college graduation. She picks the rusty Beetle. Her mechanic friend Kevin finds a racing suit and helmet inside it, and at a car show Herbie maneuvers Maggie into an impromptu race against NASCAR champion Trip Murphy, which the car wins. Ray Sr. has forbidden her to race since a street racing accident years earlier. Trip, obsessed with the unknown driver, organizes a competition to draw Herbie back.

- Director Angela Robinson said she tried to get Dean Jones to reprise his role as Jim Douglas for a cameo, but scheduling problems made it impossible. False rumors then circulated that Jones had filmed the cameo and the scene had been deleted.
- Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 8 car is seen briefly, but all the Budweiser logos on it were removed and replaced with his signature, to avoid advertising alcohol in a children's film.
- Co-writers Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon wrote in their 2011 book Writing Movies For Fun (And Profit) that they were big fans of the old The Love Bug movies, but found the old Herbie films corny in a way you cannot get away with today, so they needed to put Herbie in a much more real world.
- The Girls Aloud single 'Long Hot Summer' was planned for the film and was meant to put the British band into the American market, but it was cut from the final version.
- The writers turned in a first draft and Disney greenlit the movie off it, such was the studio's confidence. After that, though, they were no longer dealing directly with the then Disney president Bob Iger.
