Plot summary
Nicky Rogan has written a string of successful plays, and his latest is opening on Broadway on the same night the Boston Red Sox meet the New York Mets in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. Everyone around him says the new play is his best, but another playwright's work was recently torn apart by Steven Schwimmer, the newspaper's new drama critic, and Rogan fears the same verdict. A lifelong Red Sox fan, he has watched the team lose games it should win. Instead of taking his seat in the theater, he spends the evening in a bar with a lady cab driver who has taken him for a local hoodlum.

- Don DeLillo wrote the screenplay in 1991, and it became the first script by the novelist ever to be filmed.
- Everyone worked for little more than scale on the independent production: Michael Keaton, cast because he was a long-time friend of producer Griffin Dunne, was paid $100 a day.
- Michael Hoffman paid out of his own pocket so the crew could film at Shea Stadium. The whole picture was shot in Manhattan in 18 days in the summer of 2004 for half a million dollars.
