Plot summary
Sgt. A.M. Valnikov is a romantic LAPD detective of Russian descent whose heavy drinking comes from the pressures of police work. His new partner is pragmatic Sgt. Natalie Zimmerman, a woman in the middle of a midlife crisis who did not want the assignment. They are handed the case of a Beverly Hills socialite's kidnapped pet dog, and their investigation leads them through dog shows, animal fanatics, and pet cemeteries. Natalie believes she always draws the black marble, meaning bad luck, and initially sees Valnikov that way.
