Plot summary
Hazel Motes is a 22-year-old war veteran who is not a believing Christian. What he sees at a run-down country church, the ridiculous frauds he meets on the streets and his memories push him toward the part of a traveling preacher, though he refuses at first. A cab driver tells him his new hat makes him look like a preacher. He starts the Church of Truth Without Christ, without the crucified Jesus, and an 18-year-old simpleton with a prophetic gift becomes his first disciple.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Wise Blood (1979)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- John Huston's first choice for Haze Motes was Tommy Lee Jones, and Brad Dourif was offered the role of Enoch; Dourif wanted only Haze, so when Jones proved unavailable, Huston let him audition and cast him on the spot.
- A real shrunken head from Mercer University was used in the film and appears on screen; the university repatriated the head in 2019.
- The opening titles were designed by a child for a deliberately offbeat, surreal effect, which produced misspellings, among them Huston's name spelled "Jhon Huston."
