Plot summary
By the close of the 1960s, Mary Rose Foster is a star of rock and roll, known to audiences as The Rose. Fame has left her lonely, and her manager and promoter Rudge Campbell keeps her working without pause. Rose drinks heavily, once used drugs, and wants approval from the people around her. She is set on going back to her Florida hometown as a star and singing for the people from her past. After a show in New York City she meets the country singer Billy Ray on Long Island, a man whose songs she covers onstage, and he orders her never to perform his music again. Rose then takes off with Huston Dyer, a limousine driver, and the pair begin a romance.

- The film began life under the title Pearl, named for Janis Joplin's own nickname, but had to be rewritten after her family refused the rights to her story.
- Ken Russell turned down the film to direct Valentino instead, and later called passing on it the biggest mistake of his career.
- Michael Cimino was briefly attached to direct before leaving to make Heaven's Gate instead, though he still made uncredited contributions to the screenplay.
- Suzy Williams was originally offered the lead role of Mary Rose Forrest but turned it down for personal reasons, suggesting it go to Bette Midler instead.
