Plot summary
David, ten years old, has been mute since watching his mother die in a fire that Union soldiers set at the family homestead. His father, John Chandler, a Confederate veteran, brings him to a town in Illinois to see Dr. Enos Davis, who says a surgeon in Minnesota may be able to help. In the street, Chandler's sheepdog Lance clears a flock of sheep from the road; the herd belongs to rancher Harry Burleigh, whose sons Jeb and Tom try to take the dog. Chandler fights them, is knocked out, and is falsely blamed for the brawl, leaving him to pay thirty dollars or spend thirty days in jail. Linnett Moore, who shielded David during the fight, pays the fine so that he can work it off on her ranch, where Burleigh is pressing her to sell her land.
