Plot summary
Tom Skelton comes back to his home town of Key West, Florida, hoping to make his living as a professional fishing guide, taking paying customers out on the water. Nichol Dance is already a guide there, and when Dance is arrested, Tom volunteers to run his charters while he is in jail. Tom's grandfather, the lawyer Goldsboro, agrees to stake him the money to have a custom motorized skiff built, so that Tom can carry his own clients. Another captain, Carter, works the same trade. With a boat of his own, Tom goes into competition with the captains already taking visitors fishing, and his arrival sets off a feud with Dance.

Three different endings were shot for the confrontation in the boat: in one the two men struggle for the gun, throw it in the water and end up hugging and laughing; in another one of them is shot and dies in the boat; in the third they throw the gun away and both walk to shore.- Thomas McGuane both wrote and directed the film, and he was married to one of its female stars while carrying on a scandalous affair with the other, as Elizabeth Ashley set out in her autobiography Actress: Postcards from the Road.
