Plot summary
Sonny Phillips returns to New Orleans in 1981 after his time in the military and stays with his mother, Jewel, who keeps a small brothel. Before he left, Sonny earned his living there as a gigolo, and Jewel would like him to take up that work again. She tells him clients from his old life still miss him and that she never had a better gigolo. Sonny keeps refusing, because he wants a different life, and he waits for a job a friend from the service promised to arrange for him. That job does not come through. Left with nothing else, he goes back to working for Jewel. A new woman at the house, Carol, meets him soon after, and the two of them talk about leaving together.
