Plot summary
In 1999, Johnny Truelove sells marijuana around the San Gabriel Valley, taking his supply from his father, Sonny. Frankie Ballenbacher is his closest friend and second in command; Tiko Martinez provides the muscle, and Elvis Schmidt owes Johnny money. Jake Mazursky, a drug user in debt to Johnny as well, asks his father Butch and stepmother Olivia for a loan. Zack, Jake's younger half-brother, admires him and wants out of his home. Jake pays only part of what he owes, and the two men fight; Johnny then tells Jake's employer that Jake uses drugs, costing him his job, and Jake breaks into Johnny's house and wrecks it. Johnny, Frankie and Tiko go looking for Jake, and, finding Zack by the side of a road, take him along.

- During filming in 2004, Santa Barbara County Deputy District Attorney Ronald J. Zonen gave the production copies of case documents and served as an unpaid consultant, wanting the suspect captured. After the man was caught in Brazil and returned to the United States, a California appeals court ruled on 5 October 2006 that Zonen be recused from prosecuting him.
