Plot summary
At her high school, Andie Walsh and her friends face harassment from the wealthy, popular students, among them Benny Hanson and Steff McKee. Andie, a senior in the Chicago suburb of Elgin, lives with her underemployed father, Jack, and works after school at Trax, a record store run by the quirky Iona. Her closest friend is Philip Dale, called Duckie, who is in love with her but afraid to tell her. Andie brings up the senior prom with Iona, who urges her to attend even without a date. Blane McDonnagh, a preppy student in Steff's circle, takes an interest in Andie and asks her out.

The film originally ended with Andie choosing Duckie instead of Blane, but test audiences booed that pairing, so John Hughes wrote a new ending that was filmed months later on a soundstage built to match the original ballroom set.- With only two days before going on tour, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark wrote "If You Leave" in less than 24 hours after Hughes rejected their original song, "Goddess of Love," for the new ending.
- By the time the new ending was filmed, Andrew McCarthy had already cut his hair and lost weight for a stage play, so he had to wear a wig to match his earlier appearance in the film.
- Anthony Michael Hall turned down the role of Duckie because he did not want to be typecast, and Ringwald had lobbied for Robert Downey Jr. to play the part instead.
- Charlie Sheen was considered for the role of Blane, but star Molly Ringwald convinced the filmmakers to cast Andrew McCarthy in the part instead.
- In the closing credits the film is dedicated to actress Alexa Kenin and set designer Bruce Weintraub, both of whom died shortly after production had finished.

The film's novelization was written before the last scene was changed, so the book still carries the original ending, in which Andie ends up with Duckie.
