Plot summary
Wyoming Territory, 1861. The undermanned garrison of Fort Laramie holds a treaty peace with the Sioux Nation, whose chief, Red Cloud, is paid in gold. Red Cloud plans to take the gold and use the missed payment as a reason to go to war. News of the coming Civil War splits the post: roughly a third of the soldiers follow Sgt. Darrach in backing the Confederacy, and the rest follow Sgt. Serrell and the Union. When word of Fort Sumter arrives, the Confederate faction wants to leave the army and carry the gold shipment to Texas. Capt. James Tenslip worries that Maj. Seth Bradner, the post commander and a Virginian, might back the South. Bradner sends Tenslip to bring in a fresh gold shipment, escorted by a mix of Southern and Northern troops.
