Plot summary
Newly appointed to command a cavalry troop on a patrol to Fort Bowie, Lieutenant Jonathan Davenport has been trained at West Point but knows little of the West. He covers that gap with arrogance, and his second-in-command, Sergeant Wade McCoy, a seasoned hand on the Tomahawk Trail, does not hide his criticisms. Davenport's misjudgment costs the platoon its ammunition and supply wagons during an Apache attack. The horses are stolen that night, leaving the men to cross the desert on foot. Resentment of the lieutenant grows among the soldiers, and it sharpens when he accuses McCoy of cowardice.
