Plot summary
Lucky is ninety years old and lives in an isolated house in Piru, California. At the convenience store he buys cigarettes and a carton of milk, and Bibi, who owns the store, mentions that her son Juan has a tenth birthday coming in a week. That evening he drinks Bloody Marias at Elaine's with the regulars, one of whom, Howard, is depressed because his pet tortoise, President Roosevelt, has escaped. The next morning Lucky is entranced by the blinking numbers on his coffeepot, grows light-headed and falls, smashing his ceramic mug.
