Biography

Eduardo Ciannelli was an Italian baritone and character actor whose long American film career often cast him as gangsters and criminals, sometimes credited as Edward Ciannelli. He was born in Lacco Ameno, on Ischia, and was drawn to grand opera and the dramatic stage, becoming a successful baritone who sang at La Scala and toured Europe. After moving to the United States, he appeared on Broadway in Always You and Rose-Marie and in Theatre Guild productions with Alfred Lunt, Lynn Fontanne and Katharine Cornell. His roughly 150 screen and television appearances included the fanatical Thuggee guru in Gunga Din (1939), Marked Woman (1937), Strange Cargo (1940), Attila (1954), Helen of Troy (1956), Houseboat (1958), The Visit (1964) and The Secret of Santa Vittoria (1969). In 1961 he returned to Broadway in The Devil's Advocate, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor.
