Plot summary
The king of the Huns dies, and his sons Bleda and Attila inherit the throne of a people whose tribes and allies have swept the Asian steppes and the lands of both Roman empires. Bleda, weary of fighting, wants his people to settle as Rome's allies; Attila puts his faith in the sword. Flavius Aetius, a Roman general who spent years as a hostage among the Huns, arrives at their palace with a message from the emperor Valentinian III and learns the old king is gone. He wins no firm peace, only a fragile agreement that doubles the tribute. At Ravenna, the emperor devotes himself to court festivities while his mother Galla Placidia rules in his place. His sister Honoria asks Aetius to help her take power, and he refuses, sworn to serve the empire.

- Attila's 1958 US release established the exhibition pattern known as "saturation booking": Joseph E. Levine moved about 90 prints through regional hubs, and the film played more than 300 theatres in New England alone.
- Impressed by Levine's Attila campaign, Warner Bros. paid him a $300,000 advance for Hercules. Released on over 600 prints, 175 of them at once in Greater New York, Hercules became the 4th highest-grossing US release of 1959.
- In English-language versions of Attila, the title character's voice was dubbed by Anthony Quinn himself, and many English lines do not match the dialogue spoken in Italian.
