Biography

William Edmunds was an Italian-American actor who worked on stage and in film, usually in character parts with heavy Italian, Spanish and French accents. Born in San Fele, Italy, he arrived in the United States as a boy and began acting on the New York stage. His first credited screen role came in the Bob Hope comedy Going Spanish (1934), and after moving to Hollywood in 1938 he worked steadily in supporting parts, among them a gypsy leader in House of Frankenstein (1944), the boss of Groucho Marx in Double Dynamite (1951) and a brief appearance in Casablanca (1942). He appeared with James Stewart in three films: The Mortal Storm, The Shop Around the Corner (1940) and It's a Wonderful Life (1946), playing the bar owner Mr. Martini, the part for which he was best remembered. He also had top billing in the 1951 television comedy Actors' Hotel and acted on Broadway in The New York Story and Follies.
