Florence Bates
Biography
Born in San Antonio, Texas, Florence Bates was an American stage and film character actress who often played grande dame types in supporting roles. She earned a mathematics degree at the University of Texas, taught school, and became one of Texas's first female lawyers before leaving the law to run her father's antique business and work as a bilingual radio commentator. In the mid-1930s she auditioned for a Pasadena Playhouse production of Emma and landed the part of Miss Bates, later adopting the character's name professionally. Alfred Hitchcock then cast her as Mrs. Van Hopper in her first major screen role, Rebecca (1940). Over the next 13 years she appeared in more than 60 films, among them Kitty Foyle (1940), Heaven Can Wait (1943), I Remember Mama (1948), A Letter to Three Wives (1949) and On the Town (1949), and she also had a regular role on the television show The Hank McCune Show.
