Steven Geray

Biography

Steven Geray was a Hungarian-born American character actor whose career spanned more than 100 films and dozens of television programs. Born in Ungvár, Austria-Hungary, he studied at the University of Budapest and began acting on stage in his native Hungary before making his London debut in 1934. He started in English-language films in 1935 and relocated to Hollywood in 1941. During his prime he appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound (1945) and Howard Hawks's Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). He also took the lead in the low-budget noir So Dark the Night (1946), which earned positive critical reviews. He became a fixture in film noir, with roles in The Mask of Dimitrios (1944), Gilda (1946), In a Lonely Place (1950), and The House on Telegraph Hill (1951). He kept working in films and television into the 1960s, including a 1962 Perry Mason episode.
