Vince Barnett

Biography

Vince Barnett was an American film actor who worked on stage before making more than 230 films from 1930 to 1975. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology and appeared on Broadway in Earl Carroll's Vanities in 1927. His first Hollywood work was as a screenwriter on two-reel movies in the late 1920s, and he began acting in films in 1930. He spent the next 45 years in hundreds of comedy bits and supporting parts, usually as comic relief, and later took straight character parts, often as small, weary men. His films included Scarface (1932), Thirty Day Princess (1934), The Killers (1946), and The Falcon's Alibi (1946). After World War II he worked often on television, and he retired from acting in 1975. He died in 1977.

Barnett earned a reputation in Hollywood as the professional ribber, paid to insult guests at banquets and parties in a thick German accent.
A change of course
During the change from silent films to sound, a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer employee paid Barnett to prank Louis B. Mayer. Pretending to be a sound expert, Barnett told Mayer the soundstage under construction had to be torn down, until co-workers revealed the joke.
