Biography
Montagu Love was a British stage and screen actor and illustrator. Born in Southsea, Portsmouth, and educated in Great Britain, he began his career as an artist and illustrated for The Illustrated Daily News in London. His stage debut came with an American company on the Isle of Wight, and he reached Broadway in The Second in Command in 1913. He was typically cast as heartless villains. In the 1920s he appeared with Rudolph Valentino in The Son of the Sheik (1926), with John Barrymore in Don Juan, and with Lillian Gish in The Wind (1928). One of his first sound films was The Mysterious Island (1929), with Lionel Barrymore. He played Henry VIII in The Prince and the Pauper (1937) and the bigoted Bishop of the Black Canons in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). He was Don Alejandro de la Vega in The Mark of Zorro (1940). His last performance was in Wings Over the Pacific (1943).
