Biography
Cary Grant, born Archibald Alec Leach in Bristol, was an English-American actor who became one of classic Hollywood's leading men. He arrived with the Pender Troupe as a teenage stage performer, built a name in vaudeville, and moved to Hollywood in the early 1930s. Early roles in crime films and dramas, including Blonde Venus (1932) and also She Done Him Wrong (1933), led to the screwball comedies that made him famous, such as Bringing Up Baby (1938), The Awful Truth (1937), The Philadelphia Story (1940), His Girl Friday (1940). He earned two Academy Award nominations, and the Academy gave him an Honorary Award in 1970; he received a Kennedy Center Honor in 1981. Alfred Hitchcock directed him in Notorious (1946), North by Northwest (1959), Suspicion (1941), and To Catch a Thief (1955). Later films included An Affair to Remember (1957), Charade (1963), Indiscreet (1958), That Touch of Mink (1962), and Operation Petticoat (1959). He retired from film acting in 1966.
